No matter where you’ve worked, you had a manager. They have been good, or they may have been bad. You’ve probably also seen managers who are exceptional. They never seem to have to work extra time, their team works well together, they never have bad turnover, anytime someone leaves it’s a promotion they excel in, and you probably have a clear idea of who this person is, maybe you work in that team. This outcome I’ve just described is what winning managers do. So the big question is, how do they do it? Let’s look at 5 ways that managers build their successful teams.

  1. Person over skill

Technical knowledge is vital to performance of a team, but what is even more important is the quality of the people. This is especially important for collaborative work spaces. Technical skills can be taught, through training and other educational methods. But, it is much harder to teach interpersonal and collaborative skills. Though these interpersonal skills may seem simple, they are things people have to choose to do which sometimes may run contrary to how they actually are. In fact many organizations invest millions of dollars to try to teach these interpersonal skills, and very rarely do they get the results they desire. It is much easier to just start off hiring great people. Great managers always start with great people and then look for knowledge.
