Understanding what you want in your professional life

We spend roughly the first 25 years of our lives going through our formative years of education and socialization. But the bulk of our lives are spent in the professional space where we work to earn a living. Whether you are entrepreneur or a 9–5er you are working. Oftentimes our professional goals are tied to closely with life goals, but sometimes they are completely unrelated. This leads us to ask how can we figure out what we want in our professional life. So lets look at 5 things we can do to better understand what we want our professional aspirations to be.

  1. Realistic expectations

Most people start with an idea of what they think a particular job will be like. For example, if I am a doctor then I will be saving lives as and just have to make it through school. These ideas we have often don’t mirror real life or match the realities of situations. Doctors and many high earning careers work much longer hours than other professions. This fact often isn’t highly regarded when we think about a career. Other things to think about are how other triggers that carry over to our personal life. If you have a certain lifestyle in mind other careers aren’t well suited to allow you to pursue that lifestyle.
