What does the board do

When you look at major corporations there are the C-suite level and then there is the board. The board is short for Board of Directors, who provide oversight over the company. A corporation is a public entity in large cases, but because it has a dual role of business and entity it requires additional oversight. The CEO runs the day to day operations and reports its performances to the public investors and the board. The public investors are the people who invested into the company suck as stock holders of a company like Apple. The board of directors in their role of oversight helps to shape who how the company may be run in more active roles. But in more general roles they provide input into the direction of organizational strategy, compensation for the CEO, and in cases terminating the CEO. Generally most corporations will have boards of some kind, whether they are legal requirements for operation or for more specific issues that they may face. What is unique about a board of directors is that these positions are not exclusive to internal members, very frequently you will see board members who are from external organizations. Some of this is to provide additional knowledge on specific subjects or have a high level of influence, but typically have no ties to the corporation.
