Boredom is generally associated with younger people, who have energy and time, but nowhere to direct them. You would think as an adult that you wouldn’t suffer from boredom after all theres so much you could do. But the reality is that you can suffer from boredom at any point in your life. If we were to simplify this concept, one of the main reasons we get bored is because we aren’t engaged. Boredom in itself is a complex topic with many contributing factors. While we can’t get rid of boredom entirely, and a little bit may be helpful, lets look at 3 reasons why you are suffering from boredom and 1 powerful way we can use it to guide us to success.

  1. You can’t focus

Generally the focus on activity shows a number of factors such as need or desire. Think of someone who is focused at work, if they don’t like their job the focus isn’t on the work its paying their bills. Someone who loves what they are doing such as playing a video game is likely to be very engaged and focused. If you are unable to focus it could mean that an activity is not engaging you enough. Just as we mentioned in the work example, we can’t always choose what we are doing there are going to be moments of boredom in our life. The issue is when they come from things we enjoy. When we can’t focus we can try taking a break to re-focus, but an effective way to bring about focus is to learn something new. Things that are too familiar don’t require us to be engaged because we know whats going to happen, but when you don’t know you have to pay more attention. This can help you feel less bored and give you new things to use to occupy your time.

2. Things are too rigid

When your schedule is too rigid there is not a lot of room for passion. Passion is not just important for your work, but its critical for life. When things are rigid you start to go through the motions and not to care as much. After this goes on for awhile its not uncommon for boredom to follow. If you find yourself in this type of situation, you need to add some flexibility to your life. Allow yourself some time to step out of your routine whether its to do something you enjoy or give yourself a change of pace. Routines can be very helpful, but they are easy for us to get stuck in so periodically making changes can help inject a small new challenge into your life.
